If you are an Ian McEwan fan (and I am) this reads like a compilation of many of his favourite plot lines, locations, dilemmas and literary nods. It is another masterpiece of the minutiae and the pivotal moments that make the normal amazing and the promising lost. It is a masterclass of story lining, attention to detail, bringing you into the psyche of characters who you may originally have no interest in following. It took me a long time to get started, but once I did I consumed as quickly as possible.
