I do seem to remember this show. Why does it say it's a prequel? It's obviously a sequel. You can see the artist drew Max as an older dog so it definitely is after the events of the Christmas show. I suppose the Grinch's heart must have shrunk a bit from then. Unfortunately, like all sequels of 50s and 60s kids shows, the story and animation suffers. There was a certain quality to the animation and story-line of shows I grew up with as a kid in the 60s. How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Charlie Brown Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown all had it. Santa Claus is Coming to Town has it, squeaking in with good animation and story for a show written in 1970. Halloween is Grinch Night, Rudolph's Shiny New Year, Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and Frosty's Winter Wonderland does not. Was the animation cheapened because it became more expensive to produce? Was it more difficult to write a captivating story because those involved were bored? Then throwing in song after song just to fill time when it did nothing for the story. I just don't know. Call me a Grinch but I miss the magic of the 60s kid specials.
