I am a crime buff and I actually hated it. The guy playing Gein is way too young and pretty to be a good fit. And the voice is intolerable. It also comes across that they try to infantilize Gein and to make him a sympathetic character. I understand challenging views by asking viewers to see multiple facets of a character, but they take it too far. They paint a picture of diminished culpability, which, I feel, minimizes the things that he did.
Also, the point that they try to make about viewers being more of a monster than Gein is, is kind of gross and worn out. They imply that people weren’t fascinated with gore before sensationalism in films inspired by Gein, that such films darkened American psyche. I feel like that kind of glorifies Gein as some icon of horror film and disregards the fact that people have been fascinated by gore forever.
Also, the prominence of the graphic holocaust storyline doesn’t make sense, and adds unnecessary darkness to an already incredibly dark story.
Honestly, I could go on and on about the things I didn’t like about it. Overall, the only thing about the show that I thought was good was the production value, but the series itself isn’t good enough to be worth the exposure to how graphic the whole thing is.
