One of the last good games from Ubisoft, before it had become Ubisoft of today.
There are only two reasons to not like this game: 1) It's outdated in 2025 2) And too high expectations of the people in 2014. Basically Ubisoft lied to us about graphics and some of the little details, but generally on its own the game is solid, and deserves 5/5 from me. The point being, people hate on it, because people expected too much. And they have all the rights to do so, but towards the "Ubi", because straight up lying is really low. Looking back I ask myself, did we really believe that all of these cool things were really possible on PS3 hardware? Come on, give me a break. It's obvious that they had to downgrade at some point, to make it possible to run on those consoles. And that's another point +1 to the argument that console is the bottleneck of gaming. Still is.
And objectively speaking, neither of the reasons are good to hate on this game. For 2014, it's an outstanding video game. The game world felt alive, the so-called atmosphere people talk about is there. Comfy and cozy, etc. Also, the hacking is awesome, despite being unrealistic there is still balance, unlike the next games in the franchise that turned it all into Cyberpunk (went too far). The graphics are excellent, better than GTA V, say what you want but it is true. The missions try to be as interesting and different as possible, nothing like the modern Ubisoft, no "Bring me 15 flowers" type of stuff. Alongside with Sleeping Dogs, this game shares its title of being the best GTA-clone. More than that, at least for its time, in 2013, it really tried to overthrow the king of the kings (GTA). At least they tried.
For PC, there are a few downsides: vehicle handling, aiming and FPS lock (~60 or 75 idk). Hence I say WD1 is outdated in 2025.
Screw Ubisoft and haters. Forgot to mention, this game feels like the last game that has that good 2000s feeling, idk how to describe it. The missions, the vibes, dialogues, and the lack of "woke/sjw" stuff. It was like a last goodbye from the true Ubisoft, and I'm sure the greedy CEOs laid off a bunch of good developers after the release.
