What could have been an intriguing modern take on the Riddler as social media provocateur radicalizing angry young men to violence ends up being a slow and ponderous story that gets bogged down in pointless subplots and inconsequential secondary characters. For a nearly 3 hour run time, frustratingly little happens, except to set up the next film in the franchise.
Pattinson is a decent enough Batman/Bruce Wayne but there have been so many Batman films over the last 30 years, he doesn't stand out either. With so many other films to compete against, this outing did very little to distinguish itself from the crowd or explore Gotham lore in any newinteresting ways. It's dark and gritty, like every other Batman film.
There is a good two hour movie in the film, but it's buried under another hour of mess and filler. That's a shame.
