I absolutely love this drama. The plot is so refreshing. Characters are realistic, well-crafted with a logical backstory. The story resembles real life that humans are flawed and we all have toxic people in our lives like family, friends or coworkers. This drama is one of the closest ones to my heart.
Yoo Jung is the character that makes my heart hurt.
I can feel his emotions and pain and understand why he is who he is.
It’s sad to watch how he was treated by his father when he was young. When the parent punishes the child for emotional expression, the child learns that his feelings are wrong. He was forced into suppressing his emotions, leads to his inability to recognize and express his emotions in a healthy way. He desperately wants his father’s love, but the way his father treats him makes him feel unlovable. This is a root cause of his fear of being judged by others that leads to his dislike of Seol in the beginning.
Jung's attempts to maintain his “Perfect” facade come from his fear of criticism and rejection. When he meets Seol who sees right through him, his fear of being exposed as someone who is cold and manipulative arises. Jung’s worst fear is letting people know who he really is because he believes no one can ever love him. People would eventually leave him if they saw the real him.
Normally, we express emotions to directly get what we want, but Jung who is incapable of expressing emotions in a direct way, use manipulation. In short, Jung manipulates others who exploit or wrong him or Seol to show his anger because he can’t directly be angry. Manipulation is the only way he knows how to deal with anger.
Deep inside, he’s just a wounded child whose inner wounds never heal.
But not only Jung, in a way, almost every character in this drama manipulates others to get what they want.
The Baek siblings manipulate, lie, play the victim, blame and hurt others to gain love, attention and financial support from Jung’s father. They create toxic dynamic in Jung’s family that makes Jung feel left out.
Sang-cheol, a senior who takes advantage of others, manipulates, bullies, and shamelessly guilt-trips Seol and others into doing something for him, is a repulsive one. For me, his disgusting behavior is 10 times worse than Jung’s.
When Jung finds out what In-ho who he considers his best friend really thinks of him, he feels betrayed and loses trust in him. The fact that the Baek siblings just pretend to be friends with him the whole time for their own benefits confirms his belief that no one can ever love the real him. It’s unbearable for him, so he decides to cut ties with them.
Well, I'd have done the same. Who would want anything to do with In-ha, let alone become a family?
I feel empathy for what happened to In-ho. It was an unfortunate event. But Jung wasn’t the one who instigated the fight, and it would not escalate into a fight if In-ho wasn’t a bully and a trash-talker. As much as I’d like to think that deep down In-ho is a decent character, one thing that I’ll never understand is his relationship with his mean, manipulative, selfish, and demanding sister, In-ha. In-ho is an enabler who witnesses his sister’s destructive behavior and repeated harm she inflicts on others but fails to take action. His enabling helps her avoid the consequences of her behavior, which leads to her assault on Seol at the end. So I feel so relieved that Seol never has any feeling for him. Just imagine Seol ends up with In-ho and has to deal with extortion, insults or other toxic behavior of In-ha makes me sick.
