In polite society, we have to be outraged by Overboard's creepy premise, but beyond the various crimes and morally intolerable acts -- abduction, fraud, brainwashing, etc. -- committed by Dean (Russell) toward Joanna (Hawn), lies a sweet tale that provides simple pleasures and smiles throughout, with a message so subtle as to be almost missed: had Dean not committed this turpitude, Joanne would have probably spent her entire life never being appreciated for who she is and what she can do outside of an ability to spend money.
