This movie when you don't compare it to the original is like a 2.5 -3 star. Something fun for kids to watch but not an amazing movie with much depth.
Compared to the original it's a 1 star. It cuts out or changes many of the powerful moments in the original film in favor of nothing at all or a cheap replacement.
Here's the thing if you want to watch this movie pirate it. It's not worth the money.
Some things that have changed(this is not a complete list):
Grandmother is not long there her role is more or less replaced by Mulans sister.
Mulans sister is used as a device to compare her to the perfect woman.
Cricket is a person not an actual cricket
Phoenix instead of a Dragon (why? They could have just had a dragon)
Mulan DOES NOT cut her hair, which I think was a mistake. Mulan cutting her hair in the original was a powerful moment significant of her choice to pose as a son. It also was the point of no return.
The father daughter moment after the match making where he tells her she's a flower late to bloom is not present.
The huns leader is seeking revenge over the killing of his father not nessecarily only power.
The power of chi introduced to this film which I think was the biggest mistake Of the film.
Chi is a power everyone has according to the movie but only men can use it (women with too much of it are... Witches?)
Our main character Main character Mulan has a lot of inheriant strength due to her chi and training as a child. Because of this we lose a lot of the character development of Mulan learning to fight. We also lose the bonding moments where she gains strength through her friendships.
We meet a witch who tries to say that Mulan and her are the same and get her to join her etc.. etc..
..( surprisingly the witch is a far more interesting character than Mulan herself and probably the only good thing to come out of the addition of "chi")
