Trouble started from when Geoff told his wife Kate that they’d found “my Katya”, the body of his long ago lover who had fallen into a ice crevice and remained there until the advent of global warming melted the ice to reveal it. What could have been a pre-marriage first relationship turned out to be much more than that.
The perfection of a first love, shared without responsibilities or constraints or burden, compared to the content but so-British, so successful marriage allows for no winner or loser. The underbelly of Geoff’s personality holds a layer of cynicism which borders on the unattractive. The almost mocking, sarcastic performance by him at the anniversary celebration closes the door on a happy future.
One of the best movies I have ever seen.
