Born in 1951 in the days of Dixon of Dock Green and other early postwar series, 'I Love Lucy' with its washing machine, dishwasher, flash cars and other trappings seemed exciting and modern. Not that I didn't like the English offerings particularly drama but 'Lucy' was a sign of US dominance in sitcoms along with The Phil Silvers Show and the Dick van Dyke Show in the sixties. Before you say "What about The Rag Trade and Steptoe" I have fond memories of those as well.
