The most comprehensive book about the English language I know. The authors could compress an unbelievable amount of information under 500 pages, covering the 5 main areas of English linguistics (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics). On top of that there is an introduction clarifying some fundamentals about linguistics and a "bonus" chapter about language teaching. As a linguist and English teacher, I highly recommend it.

Probably the best introduction to language and linguistics out there. Not just for its comprehensive content but also for its clear explanations. I highly recommend it.
