As someone who lived in LA at the time in which this movie takes place, I can attest that it is recreated with astonishing accuracy, and Quentin Tarantino's penchant for rewriting and reshuffling history is used to great - and, at times, even moving - effect. All of his strengths - writing of dialogue, direction of actors - are in evidence here as much as they have ever been. It's a completely enjoyable film, and, like so much of Mr Tarantino's work, has many of the virtues of the films from the past that he so reveres.
