I believe the screenwriter got his idea for this movie from a nonfiction article in the New Yorker a few years back on the subject of these grifter “public guardians”. When I read the article I was astounded that people actually were able to get away with the elder abuse depicted in the article and at the beginning of the movie. However, I expected the movie to be an expose docudrama movie but that was turned on its head once Peter Dinklage entered. Having the knowledge that people really do in real life what Marla did in the movie made the rest of the movie seem not so farfetched.
