Some of the reviews for this movie that I've read have been very disappointing. Mostly because they anticipate a movie to fundamentally alter their lives while, in reality, its only purpose is to briefly amuse you. I was reading a certain review. He made a misogynistic remark about how he could only suspend his disbelief to a certain extent since he couldn't believe a 5 foot 4 woman could take down a group of big guys. It’s called training dude and most importantly: fiction.
The Internet reviews lead you to believe that this movie is a flop because It didn’t make enough money. I would like to counter that with the fact that no one goes to the movie theatres anymore. They wait until the movie comes out on a streaming service. For example, I asked someone the other day if they were going to go watch Guardians of the Galaxy, and he responded by saying “no I’ll wait for it to stream”. And he doesn’t mean buying it for 24.99 on Disney. He means, waiting for it to be free with his 8.99 a month subscription.
I don’t know if it’s because of Covid or just a sign of the times, but people do not go to movie theatres anymore for multiple reasons. I often don’t go because I don’t feel like spending $30 on a bag of gold topped with extra butter.
As for the movie, Renfield, I knew I was gonna watch it because I love Nicolas Cage. I am very loyal to actors I’ve been watching my entire life and I do love him in this movie. Nicholas Hoult is moving up on my list of actors I enjoy watching. He is the king of inner dialogue, which I find extremely amusing. I don’t expect this movie to change my life. I expect this movie to entertain me and that’s what it did.
As we’re going to movie theaters, the last time I went, was to watch the Mario movie because my daughter wanted to see it, and I can’t stand ‘cartoons’. Previously , I went to see Spider-Man: No Way Home. Why did I go watch it in the theater? Because I wanted to watch Willem Dafoe on the big screen again.
I also will be returning to the movie theatre to watch Mads Mikkelsen in Indiana Jones. Again, I am very loyal to actors that I like.
I honestly believe that Renfield will land in the cult movie category. So if you believe it hasn’t made enough money yet, just wait a while. It will. If it’s not your cup of tea that’s fine but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think I’ve seen every single Dracula movie ever made.
