Contrary to many of the critics this show is not about racist cops, it is about real policing in a tough poor city. The show doesn't sugarcoat the dangers or animosity that the police undergo and many of the worst officers are black. What the show does portray is the way the community and the police harden into two camps and how those camps almost go to war with each other to the detriment of both. I found the first episode to be difficult to understand but have stuck with it and have been rewarded especially with the great acting. My main criticism is the constant jumping of time lines, though that does show how an officer can go from dedicated and eager to burned out and ultimately corrupt, even while still trying to do the core job. If you just want good guys bad guys simplistic plots this ain't for you. But if you want a real look at some of our fundamental problems this show which is based on true research may not make you feel warm and fuzzy but will make you think, I know it did that to me.
