May be because I haven't seen the Telugu version of Jersey or may be I am a huge Shahid Kapoor and Cricket fan.
Surely, one of the best I have seen this year so far.
Just watched it on Netflix in one go and had a great time,
I loved Shahid's Kaminay, Haider and Udta Punjab but his recent portrayals of complex characters like Kabir Singh and Arjun Talvar in Jersey just now have put him on another level on my list.
I know Jersey hasnt made as much money as Kabir Singh did and it can be deemed as a financial failure by looking at it's box office numbers, since the film's release date got postponed twice due to the covid pandemic, which may have caused the film's initial hype to fade away by the time it hit the Theatres. But thankfully, it's out there on an OTT platform now which will make it easier for people to watch it and then form an opinion.
Story telling is on point, I looked at the time duration when the movie started and I thought to myself that may be I'll just watch the first half today but ended up watching the entire movie instead. It is a slow burner at times but then once you are invested in Shahid's character then you'll introspect and self reflect with Shahid when he's quite in some scenes.
This movie's cricket scenes choreography is by far the best I have seen in movies in general and the cricket scenes being more interactive is what sets this movie apart.
The music is incredible with wonderful songs throughout the movie except for the one at the end which starts when Arjun Talvar's Son is walking out of his father's tribute ceremony with a Jersey in his hands.
Another reason why I say the music was incredible because it helped the director tell his story without boring the audience, as he used music and songs to build chemistry between the two leads instead of having them lip sync and used the music and songs for Shahid's montages too which keeps the story engaging. .
This should go down as one of the best acting gigs in Shahid's career so far and the chemistry between the real life father-son duo on screen between Shahid and Pankaj kapoor was magical to watch as well as the chemistry between Shahid and the child actor who plays his Son in the movie.
Pankaj Kapoor's punjabi accent was a nice throwback to his Zee TV days where he played an elder Punjabi Brother to Satish Kaushik's character in Comedy Sketches in a Music Charts Show, yes I know, the format of the show sounds weird but it was the 90s and nobody cared. The rest of the supporting cast did exactly what was required of them to do, I can pinpoint bad acting cues, reactions or deliveries but I'd rather look at this movie as a whole and as a whole, this movie and its characters succeed in telling a story of Arjun Talvar, a sportsman, a father, a husband, a friend and a student, who was born to play Cricket according to his Coach (Pankaj Kapoor).
I might watch Arjun Talvar's Cricket highlights from the movie many times in the future, especially his square cuts and cover drives.
