So Monster Hunter Stories 2.. Has been an incredible experience for me so far. If you're like me you'll remember being a kid playing a dusty old gameboy with the Original Pokemon games and wishing, just wishing for a full open world version. While Pokemon Sword & Shield had a version of this in the Wild Area, Monster Hunter Stories 2 took this concept to the next level and it's pretty much a fully open world game (with zones obviously) that you can tame, ride and battle monsters in.
Monster Taming:
It can be hard to review this game without mentioning Pokemon as it was obviously inspired by it, but this is also a full Monster Hunter game as well, and your player character also fights along with your "Monsties" as the game playfully calls them. Like other titles in the series you'll battle monsters and make gear from their materials, but in this series you need to find eggs in Dens of different rarities, and hatch them in order to get new monsties.
Post Game:
There aren't many turn-based games with this many armor sets, or with an actual endgame but this game has both the player-versus-player style post game you'd expect from a series similar to Pokemon, but also Higher rank monsters to fight and expeditions. In regards to post-game there's also the Elder's Lair which offers a series of trials, and you can earn Elder Dragon eggs and rare items.
Story & Combat:
It has a decent story, and for a Monster Hunter game that's actual quite out of the norm, as the series in general has always focused on gameplay first. I don't want to spoil it for you guys so you'll have to experience it yourself. For combat it has a rock, paper, scissors mechanic to fights that can seem incredibly simple at first, but later you'll realize is more complex when you have to factor in things such as different phases, and the monsters element(etc) For optimal play you also want to change the genes of your monsters, similar to breeding in Pokemon titles. This game is still being updated, and I'm looking forward to the next updates on the Roadmap.
Overall:
It's a great game and I'd give it a solid 9/10 , it does have some performance issues on the Switch but that's to be expected.
