I so wanted to like this and for the first bit of the movie it was good. Its the old tale of coming of age young woman and over protective family with family traditions as well as a few big twist. Ultimately, this falls apart in the solution and moral of the story.
So, if I had to sum up the message its- "parents, at 13 years old, get out of the way and let you daughter live her own life any way she seems fit. She can shake her butt to attract guys, be a groupie at a concert and ditch you on a dime to hang out with her friends who are now much more important than you"
It's okay to wrestle with the family dynamic, but I'm sorry a hormone driven teenage girl has no idea of the consequences of decisions like this and the moral should of been to give space with parameters and respect. Your daughter is not capable of calling her own shots at 13 and still needs rules to protect her (even if she doesn't understand it) from consequences of people taking advantage of her. The movie even has a spin on the politically charged slogan, "my body my choice" and an invitation for other kids to think the same. STDs, date rape, trafficking, mental illness, psych medication, and anxiety over regrets are at all time highs; significantly because of poor hormone driven decisions. The lack of quality parental supervision and guidance is the problem, not the solution.
