Whether the Biopic is really good? It depends on us as an audience what we want to see in a Biopic. If we are looking for realism, then a documentary on Saina would suffice, but if it's a movie then there has to be a great deal of emotions and adrenaline rush as it's based on sports. The movie does have ample of both.
The beginning scenes in the movie feels less interesting or captivating, since my usual expectations on such biopics, is that there would be lots of struggle and self doubt, conflicts which needs to be resolved at earlier scenes. But here everything seems perfect. Her mother herself is a good badminton player who is encouraging her second girl towards Badminton. Her father too is very supportive. There is a bit of financial issue but her father somehow manages the same. Sania as a kid is a pro Badminton player and everyone is getting surprised at the talent. She does keeps her winning streak right from the beginning and shows her confident self, only a small scene where there is a slip and she loses and comes runners up, her mother slaps her upfront when she was being awarded. It makes you feel bad for the girl who is putting all her efforts. But apart from that glitch everything goes normal, and even later when Parineeti comes to the fore, even she starts to win. Not much struggle early on as she looks like a destined winner.
But a story to be good there needs to be a twist. The twist comes in form of her coach Ranjan, excellently played by Manav Kaul. He is a no nonsense coach and has created an academy with a belief to create world champions and not to make money. His interaction with Saina works perfect. The coach student relationship is the highlight in the movie and the turning point as well, who helps her to rise in the game and let's her know the importance of sacrifices. However after a rise there is a fall as Saina gets distracted due to media attention and sponsors who consume her time in photoshoots and advertisement. The irks her coach Rajan, especially when she does not comes for practice as he has reserved a court specially for her. The coach does not forgives her and leaves Saina on her own. She starts to loose focus and keeps losing many matches and falls in world ranking. In a match she even injures her leg and is admitted to hospital. She feels depressed but she keeps her motivation. She feels the need to make a come back and she is advised by her boyfriend to meet her coach again to sort things out.
But things doesn't goes well. Saina's emotional angst against her coach is superb where he snubs her even though she comes from the hospital with a injured leg to meet him. Parineeti is superb in the scene. You can feel the anger and hurt on her face even though she is calm and smiling. From here Saina moves to a new academy, and there she gets her foothold back in a very important and emotionally moving scene.
She fights hard and improves her ranking, and she is hard willed to go the distance to be number one. But she and her family figure out that the task is bit too high as she has a worthy opponent by the name of Carla Martinez who has her own ways of unsettling her opponents.
The climax match is a close one and has the adrenaline running and manages to give a very emotionally satisfying end with a background song that is worth it. Overall I would say this is a must watch movie which you can fully enjoy with your family. Go for it.
