Have to give it a 3/5. I've seen the orginal too many times and it might have distorted my view of the remake.
Pros:
1. Young Ceilie & Nettie were great actors
2. Fantasia did her best with the script given
3. Mister and Harpo were convincing
4. Taraj as Shug was actually just as good as the previous Shug, if not better. Push the button perfomance was amazing.
5. Love the actual picnic around the tree at the end, it was beautiful.
6. Love that this version showed what Celie did in Memphis once she was finally free from Albert.
Cons:
1. Everything felt rushed
2. I never actually got to see the connections Ceilie made with Shug to form that lifetime bond
3. While the actor who played Sophia gave it her best, unfortunately, Oprah is still the true Sophia in my eyes. Oprah's performance was a lot more powerful.
4. I felt the acting to be just ok. Some parts weren't believeable
5. While the Georgia coast is nice to look at, it didn't belong in this movie. The orginal was in a more believeable setting. The field of purple flowers is supposed to be most beautiful agriculture, hence the name, but the coast took its spot.
6. Shug Avery reconciliation with her father was supposed to be 1 on the best scenes and this version was watered down.
7. The dinner scene with Ceilie finally speaking up for herself was also watered down.
8. The scene at the end when Ceilie is reunited with Nettie and her kids is the most iconic part of the orginal and it to was completely watered down. Furthermore, in the orginal, Ceilie kids and Adam's wife were all gorgeous, in this version when they showed them, I...........
I get they wanted to bring a new set of eyes to the story, but if a remake isn't just as good as the orginal, if not better, then it shouldn't be made.
