As a major fan of the book series I really wanted to love this. After the first few episodes I would have settled for just liking it. After finishing, not even that was possible. I went in understanding that changes to the original source material would be inevitable and tried not to get bogged down in any deviations - even when they added nothing of value to the story and appeared to serve no purpose or function whatsoever. The season was mediocre to bad throughout but
episode 8 was completely unforgivable.
The writer and the showrunner should be fired on the spot for allowing the episode to be released. Fortunately they are both the same person so that should make things easy.
The VFX of the episode, especially the trolloc attack, were absolutely unacceptable by 2021 standards. The fact that the show runner released the epsiode in such a state calls into question his professional judgement and is a clear indication that he is in way over his head. It was bad by cable TV standards, let alone high production film.
Unfortunately, this isn't even my biggest concern. Poor writing and a lack of understanding of the books is what concerns me most.
Three major stories being told in a single episode, none of which were done well or had any impact for the viewer whatsoever. The false death scene with Nynaeve was the worse bit of writing I have ever experienced on screen. Killing a main character for no reason and bringing them back to life immediately served no function to the story and had no emotional impact for the viewer. If that wasn't bad enough, the scene literally shattered the rules of magic within the WoT universe. I don't think that the writer/showrunner even realizes this, which is a major problem for future seasons.
Magic brought a person back from the dead!
So apparently, in WoT people with no experience or training, can not only reverse a channeler being burnt out, but also reverse death?!?!
Suddenly I don't really care that Morraine was stilled in the episode - that should be an easy fix for Egwene...
Are they going to show Egwene being trained to use magic in future seasons? Why? She is a God.
If decisions like these are being made this early on in production then the showrunner needs to step down and allow someone with more experience and more understanding of the books to take over. Don't let him ruin another fantasy universe.
