I've played this game since early beta in 2015. I've spent thousands of hours on the game and hundreds of dollars on skins and cosmetics over the 5 years that I have played. When the game came out on xbox a year or so back, it required me to purchase the game a second time, which I did without thought.
However, there are several elements of this game that just do not live up to par. There is a lot to unpack in this review so Ill reduce it to bite sized chunks for easy digestion.
1) The support is GOD AWFUL. When I say god awful I mean quite literally one of the most disrespectful and least helpful support teams I've ever had the displeasure of communicating with. Essentially, they will do NOTHING to resolve your support requests and if they do offer to help, it usually insinuates 'penalties' for receiving support. For example, if you wish to unlink your smite account from your steam account, it will effectively wipe all cosmetics and hard earned levels from the game... which means if you support the game twice (by buying it on different systems) ultimately one instance of your game is going to be bricked when linking to steam or trying to use cross platform.
2) The HiRez team doesn't seem to understand balance when releasing characters. They are constantly scrutinized for this in several reviews that I've read and forums (reddit forums etc). They seem to release 'Gods' that are extremely powerful or absolutely useless. Its as if they throw out all sense of reasonably balanced features when they release new characters in the game.
3) The MMR system is undoubtedly equal or worse than other MOBA games like DOTA 2 or LoL. They made no attempts to improve or change a universally despised match making system. You'll really feel the pain on this point when you start to run mid-high level ranked matches. You'll encounter people placed in divisions they are not equipped or skilled enough to play in which ultimately results in you stuck in a 10-minute forfeit match where everyone is salty and feels they've wasted time. This is a perfect transition into point 4.
4) The community. The community has absorbed this 'league of legends' type toxicity that will leave you shooketh and disgusted with the game. If you've ever been crushed in a league of legends game with toxic teammates, you understand how frequently players can throw out their sense of composition and instead turn to blaming other players on their team. I've joined games where players suicide intentionally, or plain quit after a few minutes.
The combination of these shortcomings will have you wishing a competitor company would IMPROVE on similar MOBA's rather than spitting out a carbon copy of whats already popular (LOL / DOTA) like HiRez did.
The End.
