If you've read the books and seen the original movies this one is modernized and an exciting watch. They skipped parts of the timeline like explaining how spice is used and why it's so important. Since the whole plot of the movie revolves around control of Arrakis, I think the director should have spent more time explaining this detail. For a newbie, the spice seems to be just a drug that's in demand galaxywide.
