Schizophrenia is cruel both to those who have to find a way to live with it and to their friends and family. A sad statistic is that 1/3 get better, 1/3 stay the same and 1/3 get worse. Mix in denial with a heavy dose of stigma helps account for why as many as 1/3 of the population who are schizophrenic aren't even diagnosed. Why we're ok societally with not intervening until they have either attempted suicide or are considered a threat to others. My heart aches for this woman's daughter and sister who clearly loved and cared for her but who's illness, which got worse, in tandem with inconsistent and or refusal to regularly take medication enabling stability and healthier living couldn't happen. I am so hoping this film's intimate detailing of this woman's last days have spurned changes in policy and practice to avoid this ever happening again.
