A phrase in a preview of the show stuck out to me six weeks ago..and now: "The Undoing's gloriously OTT melodrama." When I read this line initially I thought "uh, oh, I don't think I'm going to like this show" and when I saw the end of the first episode, my fears were seemingly confirmed.
But the writers did a remarkable job of creating entertainment and some sort of suspense - until the final episode. The characters are somewhat fleshed out (with the exception of the victim, but this is understandable).
In the end, the show falls victim to the goal of a lot of okay/terrible shows...it imposes its will on the audience. I am not a professional psychologist, but the implausibility rating is very high with this one. And it had to be like this, in order to carry out the intentions of the director. I'm speaking in parables because I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I think it broke a major rule of its genre and on one hand, one could say that the subversion was genius, but on the other hand - I don't think it was.
I'm biased because I am a fan of ambiguous endings, but I could settle for an amazing twist. I think the show promises more than what it delivers and that is what makes it OTT.
Nevertheless, Episodes 1-5 were a delight to watch and the whole show will get you discussing theories late into the night, so that's definitely a plus. And if you desire clarity and finality in your shows, you'll love this. Nicole Kidman and little Noah Jupe were great. Nicole is just a special actor and it's always a pleasure to watch her do her thing. Hugh Grant needs to return to TV/Cinema AS SOON AS IT IS HUMANLY POSSIBLE! He was great! Enjoyed watching him and I think he's left us for far too long. Donald Sutherland was okay, I think I had problems with his character so I couldn't take to him. Noma Dumezweni was straight up gangster! Loved her role as well.
What could have been done differently? I can't speak on this without revealing plot, but I'll say this - if the creators had loosened up on their intention to deliver us an ending that was wrapped in a cute box with a bow (and instructions on how to open said box) in some way, the show would have been much better. For me anyway. This level of clarity requires a high level of liberties to be taken, and I just felt cheated at the end.
