This is a lovely book, a quiet gem. It is written with a lyrical prose but without sacrificing pace or story. It has beautiful writing, a good story and the characters are unusual and interesting. I like magic realism so the way magical/mythological elements are introduced into normal life interested me, I like the way this stretches the story outwards.
The plot is layered in different generations without that feeling top heavy, but it also gives different ways of looking at events. This helps the way the plot moves, the momentum gathering speed towards the dramatic ending.
Mostly, this book stood out for me in the quality of the writing.
