What it takes from the book it butchers and what they wrote themselves is lazy and boring. I remember the book being a fun and thrilling ride through an (at times grim) exciting world that was established so well, the film turns this into a rushed washed out waste of an hour and a half as it desperately tries to vaguely follow the story beets whilst losing all of the wonder and excitement of the story. The visual effects are the only saving grace of this film though I do wish they’d been a bit truer to the original illustrations of the book series. I think this film (being separated from the book) could have been a fun summer blockbuster if it had been allowed to not take itself quite so seriously but I would say all in all it is a failure of an interpretation of the source material.
