The first 2 Man on the Moon albums were great because they were melodic, catchy, and were very evocative. This one is none of those things. Sure, there are melodies all over the album, but they sound uninspired and off-the-cuff. The album is littered with neat instrumentals, but most of them are ruined by the run of the mill trap drum patterns we’ve all heard on every rap album the past 3 or 4 years. It only makes sense that Cudi would include trap elements to try to keep up with modern trends, but in my opinion it did a lot of harm to the quality of the music. Of course, the inclusion of trap beats will ensure that most mainstream rap fans under the age of 30 will eat it right up because they’ve been programmed to love things like that.
