I avoided this until the latest update (Steel Dawn) and perhaps I was right to do so. I can only speak about my experiences since this update. So far I'm having a blast; this is the earliest Fallout (chronologicaly), this opens the game up to new settings, factions and stories.
I have Fallout 1st (subscription) which I don't mind paying for. I get a private server when I want and Atoms to spend on optional items/ cosmetics. I've had no problems with PvP on public servers, with most people being very friendly and leaving me alone. I play solo, so the Wastelanders update really helped to flesh out the world. I play on Xbox and although I've had no major problems, I have seen a couple of minor glitches but no crashes and nothing that makes the game unplayable. I would suggest a free-cam for CAMP building but all in all a pleasant experience.
