So when people see a bright, colorful, happy, and go-lucky childhood show, they make it like Riverdale?
Possible Spoilers Below:
Okay, this was seriously the worst adaption of a cartoon I have ever seen. There is nothing likable about this show, the characters, the writing, the setting. Everything is just playing awful. If you're like me and watched the original cartoon growing up, you know how fun it was. A mix of technology, fantasy, good friendships, and fashion, it destroyed a lot of toxic tropes we still see today. But this adaption? Does the exact opposite.
All the girls have been changed, whitewashed and even Techna, one of the main girls of the original cast, has been completely erased from the show. Bloom is seriously unlikeable. And Stella? Who's entire character was the fact she was this confident, fashionista BUT was a good person? They scraped that too. Made her out to be a stereotypical Mean Girl that bullies everyone else. They even have this weird love triangle between a guy to cause tension between the main girls, can't we for once have a show about solid, female relationships without a guy being thrown into the mix?
None of the relationships feel authentic, and the curvy girl, who is supposed to be Flora, has a story arch that centers solely on the fact people hate her because she's overweight. Again, can we have a story where an obvious curvy girl has an arch that's NOT centered around her weight? And to top it off, they whitewashed what could possibly be a Hispanic girl's role. (Also Musa, who had been theorized to be based on Lucy Liu).
Regardless, the feminism, fun, and spunk of the original had been completely stripped away to make way for another Riverdale. And if this series gets another season, I won't be surprised if it gets so convoluted it makes 13 reasons why look like a decent show.
