Update: Coming back to this review I have changed my rating from 4/5 to 5/5. I originally thought that (SPOILERS) stopping the game mid-way through at it's most climatic moment to make you see the story through the eyes of the "antagonist" was a really bold choice by Naughty Dog that makes more sense with subsequent playthroughs. Ellie and Abby's stories really mirror each other in unexpected ways, and I've come to realize that it wasn't a story about revenge, it was a story about forgiveness. I also have lost my dad since playing the game the first time, so I was able to see it through a new perspective, playing as two characters who have lost their father and who would give anything to have that time back with them again. (SPOILER END)
Original review: I don't get all the hate this game is getting? I enjoyed it a lot, and thought that the story was intriguing, heartbreaking, and bold. I can understand why certain story points would upset others, but not liking the direction a story goes in doesn't necessarily make it bad. I would have given it 5 stars if it weren't for some pacing issues at some points. I even cried several times throughout playing. Besides the story, the gameplay and level design was top-notch and a huge improvement on the original. The graphics and environments were beautiful, and watching the cutscenes felt like I was watching real people, because even the smallest of emotions came through, even in the characters' eyes. I think everyone should give this game a chance, and go in without expectations.
