I honestly had a hard time with a majority of this movie. In my opinion, the main character, Willowdean, had a horrible personality which made it hard for me to root for her. She often used her physical appearance as an excuse to take it out on others, although it can be understandable and some might not see it as a problem, it really did affect my overall perspective of this movie. In a way, I almost found Willowdean’s perspective to be a bit harmful to certain viewers, so please just be aware of that. I was contemplating whether or not to give this a good or bad rating, but decided that despite a lot of its flaws, I still roughly enjoyed it. I absolutely adored the visuals and the way Dumplin’ was filmed. There’s a very consistent tone to the movie which is achieved by the colours used, as well as the soundtrack itself. The casting was well done and I was finding myself falling in love with almost every other character despite some minor disappointing accents from time to time. The ending was a feel-good, happy ending, which I adored, although, I honestly hated how some of Willowdean’s mistakes were just brushed over without her even properly apologizing. Dumplin’ is pretty great if you can make it past some of these imperfections.
