This movie tries so hard to not be David Lynch's film that it falls very short of Herbert's novel. There is a great deal of color and nuance missing from the story telling. Most of the political pressures, intrigues, transitions and time passages are glossed over. While some individual actors manage to give strong performances, Frank Herbert's rich web of characters and relationships is almost completely missed by the writers and director. Denis Villeneuve manages to be a less thorough story teller than Lynch in triple the screen time. Dune needs a full trilogy to be told. It's a shame this chance is being wasted. The worms are impressive.
