Oh I would have loved to be in those Naughty Dog board meetings when they were writing the story for this game and see what was going through their minds. Spoilers by the way. The first game prefaced a blossoming and sympathetic relationship between Joel and Ellie with moral conflicts within the player and characters. The second game touches on this relationship but is more about justifying the death of Joel. The player expects a revenge story but instead the game ends in a depressing stalemate where there are no winners. No hope. Just pure depression. Ellie's family deserts her and Joel's legacy of teaching Ellie how to play the guitar is also abandoned. I am very confused as to what Naughty Dog were going for here as they seemed to have abandoned their secret formula of Joel and Ellie's relationship that the fans of the franchise so desperately wanted to see more of. I felt like the devs kind of had a good idea going here but it seems as though the devs themselves were conflicted and got lost along the way. It seems as though Abby's character was forced down the players throats that had the intended effect of making her a more likeable character but I personally never gave a second thought about her but was wondering where's Ellie and when will she get revenge. While playing this game, disappointment is the prominent emotion. Good graphics though and better gameplay than the first game I thought. But the story is truly disappointing and struggle to see what the creative goal was here.
