There's something touching about a love story between a sentient AI little girl and a genius young boy that underpins this piece of science fiction fabulation, as it tries to combine hard core science with a kind of gritty but hidden steam punk reality. Despite the film's depressing honesty...that the Earth is going down the toilet at an every faster rate, it's a charming piece and visual spectacle. I'm not sure why it missed its mark.

Loved it as a kid! Classic.
