They have done well to keep it true to the manga. I think the actors also did well trying to keep true to the manga/anime characters rather than making them modern day realistic. Let's face it, no one in real life acts like an anime character.
And of course, as with all anime, it's best to watch it in Japanese. If you are not used to reading subtitles, you will get use to it and soon enough not even notice you're doing it.
