I was hooked on the first couple episodes of this show. It’s got a great look, the casting and acting was excellent. I think the premise of a lot of these stories was interesting, with a lot of characters introduced who were struggling against the Hollywood system due to who they were. Also like the gas station subplot was a good plot focusing on the underbelly of all the glitz, something I’m not surprised was based on a true story.
But instead of mounting, the challenges the characters faced just kinda disappeared in the last couple episodes. It felt like the team behind the were just being self congratulating for being so open minded about racism and homophobia. But there’s still so much of it today it feels silly to not acknowledge these struggles besides some ‘empowering’ scenes and hand-wavy explanations about how everybody is accepted now. New roadblocks were introduced for cliffhangers, only to be resolved in the next five minutes.
So in short, good setup but failure to deliver a satisfying conclusion on the part of the writing.
