Mesmerising film! The fighting at the Somme was horrific and graphic but demonstrated clearly the inspiration for Tolkien’s horrible creatures and descriptions in his battle scenes. He was a sensitive child and his writing and drawing was an escape from a troubled reality. He had a very happy time at school and university where he enjoyed the ‘fellowship’ of his friends.
