An album two years in the making that disappoints all around. When the cover art for "Guts" was released, it was clear that Olivia did not want to stray away from what she knew worked for her. This is definitely reflected in the 12 songs added to her catalogue (no, I did not listen to the bonus tracks off the deluxe edition as the original 12 were more than enough for me). While listening to each track I could not help but compare to the singles that were shoved down my throat off her debut album. I could almost predict that the next song would open with a repeating single note introduced by Olivia's whispers about an ex-boyfriend who treated her poorly. Copy and paste, copy and paste, copy and paste... Keeping in mind that Olivia Rodrigo recently turned 20 and has been a global phenomenon for about three years, I can't help and think of her lyrical decisions as painfully juvenile and predictable. She had all the time and resources in the world to produce a new and fresh take on her life since gaining stardom but all we get is another look into what sounds like a teenage girl's entry in her Girl tech Password Journal (iykyk). Meh. Also, something I noticed prior to the full release of "guts" was a couple of rip-offs of Fiona Apple(my opinion: I truly believe that she knows her main audience doesn't know Fiona Apple so she took some visuals and a song title that she liked, that's probably not illegal, just annoying especially since the they were poorly used imo) Get Him Back is a song off of Fiona's 2005 album Extraordinary Machine and the scene of Olivia rising at the end of the Vampire music video was directly taken from Fiona's music video for Never is a Promise in 1996... I was not sure of these comparisons until a performance where Olivia is seen wearing a Fiona Apple t-shirt and that killed any doubt I had. Overall, this album fails to bring anything new to what we already have heard from Olivia Rodrigo and any interesting ideas can easily be traced to a previous artist who already did it better. I have no intention of revisiting this album in the future but I am sure that I will be subjected to it in grocery stores for the next couple years. Lucky me :)
