Prior to viewing, you might imagine an evocative portrayal of seclusive coastal life. Any such notions are soon cast adrift a sea of naive fantasy bearing little sensitivity to the human condition.
The lighthouse serves only to dimly illuminate adolescent ideas of male dystopia and degeneration in tell-tale black and white fashion. Two dull men, depraved drunks unable to respond with any resolution or humour to the difficulty of lighthouse life provides a pessimistic plot.
Their exaggerated idiocy and audibly enhanced passing of wind desperately defies reason and quality. The downfall of both men is narrated theatrically but despite its provocations, fails to amuse let alone enchant.
"Aye aye me old hearty I'm a bit of a pierat methinks". "take that then ye old barsteward aye!". Of course.
The lighthouse may be a resort to violence and vulgarity bit it is insipid in its lack of colour, taste and tone. It is unusual that a film should embarrass the viewer but this is an assembly of movie mechanics and little more.
