This was an authentic and evocative Russian series with a romantic, "sweeping saga" ambience, combined with a graphic picture of the realities of war and upheaval at a tortured time in Russian history. Beautifully shot, it reminded me in places of an old French 80s series called Les Dames de la côte combined with Dr Zhivago and gave great insight into a time in Russia between the Russian entrance into WWI and the ascent of The Bolsheviks and how i these events affected the lives of ordinary people. Knowing what future lies ahead of the protagonists by the end of the series, makes the story all the more Poignant.
