I am SO grateful to have stumbled, randomly, across this pic a few years back. It has everything a girl could want in a foreign language/martial arts/ period piece. This one raised the bar for any that will attempt to follow.
There are many elements that elevate this movie to the level of “epic”... and it’s hard, for me, to definitively nail down the 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 notable of them.
But, at the top would have to be the story’s characters. They really do stay with you and have resonated with me in a way that very few other things have ever managed.
( Please note: ** I watched this originally in the midst of a frenzied binge of dozens of martial arts films when I was sick with strep throat... while most of them became a somewhat, singular blur, this movie did not**)
The story and it’s characters are well written and as convincing as original in the telling.
This being made to complete, with a few stylized elements, that I found fresh & unexpected tho entirely well suited for use in the genre.
All the many parts lead to the whole package being beautifully executed.
Somehow still manages this, (in a way that stays true) with the dialogue to English being delivered via sub tittles... and that is saying something!
I wish there were a sequel or a prequel or some way thru which I could get another dose of this world and it’s characters.
In my humble opinion, it’s amazing. Nothing less..
but watch for yourself and decide if I’m right. Reviews are often completely useless in my opinion! thanks for reading my rant, if you made it this far... 💙t
