As a casual viewer, just along for the ride so to speak I'd say:
By the end of this gripping 10-hour roller-coaster of tyre smoke and emotion I'd found myself on the edge of my seat shouting at the screen, or feeling a swell of emotion as I empathised with each drivers uniquely personal story as it unfolded in front of me.
The casting for this show was exceptional, the production, the lighting, the commentary the setting, the attention to detail (with the exception of that one fateful water canon which I don't think we'll see in season 2), everything was 10/10 and they truly do deliver the perfect blend between 'ninja warrior and the fast & furious'. It's inspired me to try and find local meet-ups near me and experience this sport for myself!
Everything was on point for this show, I hope to see another season and I hope those racers who put everything on the line when they had so little to begin with make a return or find success in their pursuit of glory.
GO WATCH THIS SHOW.
To make a few criticisms in my humble, uneducated opinion I'd say:
The casting for this show was almost perfect. I think the winner was far too dominant throughout the show, you're asking a multi-championship professional drifter to go up against driving school instructors and truck drivers? That's essentially the same as bringing in Lewis Hamilton in his early F1 years to compete. It made the show less dramatic whenever he was competing (though his laps were a pleasure to watch at times).
The editing was sometimes so frustrating, for example - when describing what to do for the 1 vs 1 knockouts, the show-runners were using replays of races that hadn't happened yet! I'd already seen who was going to be in the bottom two for an episode I hadn't finished watching! Why not use dummy cars, CG, or just a line edited along the screen? This was the same with the thumbnail for the final episode - A picture of Shredders' vehicle at the foot of the podium. Talk about suspense killer.
This also leads on to the prize: just a trophy and bragging rights? two people almost hospitalised themselves, from the looks of things at least two more cars were written off. I would really like to see the competitors that reach the final all receive 'something' more significant as I expect the show will bring in a tonne of money.
I would make a few tweaks too to some of the time penalties, mainly in the 'leveler' and the one on ones. If a competitor finished the leveler they already had an advantage over someone who didn't, so why add a 30 second penalty, 5 or 10 was surely enough? The one vs one eliminations you knew were over as soon as someone received a penalty. Maybe 1/2 seconds instead of 5/10, for a 30 second course.
The Qualifying races seemed unfair for those who started late... If a racer joined in Q1, they had Q2/Q3&Q4 to reach the knockouts but those in Q4 just had to deal with one shot and you're out. There must be a better format for this? There were some amazing cars in Q4 we just never saw again.
Finally, the commentators I thought were OK, but I felt like there was some friction or bad chemistry between the main host and UFC fighter.I like the idea behind a petrolhead, a layman and a sports commentator all bringing their own viewpoints to mirror the people who might be watching at home but these guys did make me feel awkward at times.
Still. After all that, what you see as viewer far surpasses what's under the hood critically. It was a joy to watch. I wish I could have been there to see it live! 10/10!
