Definitely not for everybody. It felt like an amazing experience to have more than a conventional film to watch. I thought the story was incredibly personal and specific. Growing up in the Valley around that time allowed me a bit of a window into that world but Licorice Pizza was more of a vivid dream than a traditional Hollywood movie. The quirky casting and eccentric performances were quite brilliant and the recollections of that era were, to borrow from Gary, "hard core"!
It misses the point to become distracted by our own values and judgements. We can feel uncomfortable with some of the characters and choices without abandoning the tale. It was inspired by real experiences and emotions but is clearly a work of fiction. If you can't connect to a story unless it is tidy and conforming, you won't be able to get much of Licorice Pizza. On the other hand, if you let yourself go and embrace to feeling of riding too fast in a convertable down Ventura Blvd. after midnight, you'll probably quite like this little film.
