In what is a subversion of revenge action flicks like John Wick, Nicolas Cage gives arguably his best performance to date and Michael Sarnoski delivers one hell of a directorial debut. When we watch movies with a setup similar to Pig's, our minds expect it to go in one direction, but what Pig opts to do is subvert those very expectations at every turn. Instead of going in the direction of murder and bloodshed, Sarnoski creates what is a rather vulnerable film. Along with that, Cage is the most vulnerable and restrained he's ever been, a far cry from his usual over-the-top persona in most of his filmography (which I love.) In terms of issues, in the beginning the lighting is a bit too dark and there's one scene I couldn't quite put my finger on, but that's about it. I would give this a 4.5 but Google won't let me. Pig is genuinely awesome.
