What is Normal? Babysitting an eccentric nephew (who likes to role play as an orphan for fun) meanwhile comforting his mother (an estranged sister) dealing with a husband with mental issues is anything but normal! What ensues is a charming and profound bond between uncle Johnny (Phoenix) and Jesse (Norman), panning across New York and New Orleans, as they begin to tolerate, understand and admire each other along the way. What stays with you are exceptional performances (Woody Norman take a bow!) by the entire cast, moody cinematography (monochrome enhances it), brilliant direction, a beautifully complementing background score and a rich screenplay. It will make you think, make you smile, make you feel awkward, make you feel warm, make you cry. Highly recommend this gem!
