This is 'smart person' horror, so if you are anticipating a bacchanal of shock & awe, action, jump scares and surprises around every turn, or your attention span runs short, you will be disappointed. This is an amazing character piece, brilliantly written, directed and performed. The horror (and there is horror!) is a symbolic compliment to the themes, character narratives, setting and emotional payoff. Midnight Mass slowly peels back layer after layer in a deep and thoughtful burlesque of classic Gothic terror and beauty. I LOVED it.
