*No spoilers*
First of all, the ending had me SOOOO angry that I found myself compelled to come online and write a review. I had to remind myself it's a TV show. Overall I enjoyed though. I didn't read the book so went in totally blind. It's not your typical whodunit. That annoyed some people, not me.
The good:
Beautiful setting in the Caribbean which we don't get to see often.
The sweet friendship between Gogo and Edwin.
The suspense of finding out the truth.
The bad:
The terrible, terrible accents. They were so distracting. But that's on par with pretty much every Hollywood show featuring 'ethnic' characters. Hollywood, there are people born and raised in the Caribbean and Africa who can act!
SO MANY unlikeable characters. SO MANY. The guests of the resorts were all privileged, stereotypical, prejudiced people. But that is the type of people you'll usually find in resorts for the most part so can't really fault the show for that.
The flashbacks. Not necessarily a negative per se but I watched while doing chores and this is not a show to pay half attention to. You have to sit down and watch because you'll look up at the screen and be like who are these people. Lol. Once I actually sat down and watched it was fine.
THE ENDING. My goodness, without spoilers, 'Emily' found out the truth and did absolutely nothing to make things right. This is a death that impacted a whole country and she did nothing about it. That angered me immensely. That whole Thompson was it (?) family are self-centered, bigoted trash. BUT again, I felt this was realistic in that that's often how life is. Things happen and nobody knows and there's no consequences.
Also they bought in a romance that felt unbelievable but they executed it so sweetly that I suspended belief and went with it. It was very bittersweet.
Allison had a breakdown that really made no sense to me and I needed the show to hash that out so I could understand properly what her problem was.
I think if you're from the Caribbean you'll relate to this more. How others see you as a caricature and really take no interest in your personal lives and the fact that you are real, whole people who are something outside of entertainment/help/virtue signalling for them. And also the first to look at you when anything goes wrong.
*slight spoilers ahead* For those who couldn't understand the show or who say the ending was ambiguous for the characters, they are probably a little slow. If you have a brain you'll be able to follow it just fine. Following the evidence it's clear to 'emily' what has happened on the night. When she goes to confront someone, they were the next possible person to question, as they were having a holiday romance. She bluffs and gets information. In the show, it was explained Alison had a rough (and likely dry) escapade with someone and that explains any abrasions. Alison also tells Emily her plans. Other things are explained too. Nothing at all was ambiguous.
