This show is OKAY, definitely watchable.
Let me start by saying that I loved the original and it is definitely a cult classic. This reboot did not disappoint, it takes the story in a new direction while doing great callbacks to the original.
The core of the story, the skepticism about aliens is still intact and the love story between Max and Liz is still interesting but there is just something missing. The sense of wonder and whimsy of the original is undercut by the older and more cynical characters. The tone of the show has shifted to be more serious.
They've also added a rather trendy narrative about immigrants which fits well with the themes and setting of the show. But the show is not very subtle about its opinions on the topic.
The series started off with a bang. It is only the first season, and Liz and Max are together, there have already been numerous deaths and Max being an alien doesn't seem to be that important of a secret. I'm already getting the feeling that they are going to be jumping the shark very soon.
