The soundtrack, b/w 35 mm film, camera angles, and fine acting came together to make this a masterpiece of psychological horror. The film actually has three characters: the lighthouse keepers and the lighthouse itself. Dafoe was superb, delivering the lines just on the verge of ham, but perfect for this black comedy.
